Slang is good for casual situations, but most of the time it's better to describe an idea in a more straightforward way. Or, if you must use an idiom, explain what it means. All cultures have idioms. Sometimes, if you know your audience in advance, you can try using one that carries the same meaning in another language. Showing the horse's leg in Chinese means giving oneself away, similar to letting the cat out of the bag in the U.S.
